Team Interview: sintwister

Name: Katherine – sintwister Photography
Location: Washington, Georgia

Rachelle: I selected Katherine because I love her photography. It is rich with emotion. I was eager to get to know Katherine and her “back story” more. Anyone who is familiar with sintwister Photography knows there is always a back story and it’s usually interesting!

Rachelle: Tell me a little about yourself:

Sintwister: Let’s see – some basics about myself: I’m 34. I’m married to a fantastic man – we’ll be celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary this coming February (hopefully in Ireland!). We have one dog, Hanna Jane, a black and white border collie, who is the smartest creature I know, (sometimes I think she is secretly smarter than me!) and two cats: Santiago and Satchem. All three are total camera hams (see An Interview with Santiago, The Office Assistant and Dog Day Afternoon).

I live in this gorgeous rural historic town in Georgia that often reminds people of Gone With the Wind, due to an extensive collection of antebellum homes. That’s pre-Civil war for anyone who is not up on their architecture terms. I’m legally blind in my left eye, which gives me some sort of lopsided view of the world, which I like. In addition to photography, I am also a graphic designer and a copy writer, mostly for travel/tourism related companies and small business retail or anyone looking for more of a fluffy/dreamy kind of presence.

I’m currently working on a novel about a woman in her early 30’s struggling to find herself. Keep your fingers crossed that it makes its way to a publishing house this winter!

My most favorite book is The Great Gatsby. My most favorite movie: The Red Violin. I love to cook, love to laugh, love to travel. I enjoy a glass of wine with my girlfriends after yoga. My socks never match. I like to sing (although I’m awful at it). I collect bird art, love anything made out of paper, absolutely love vintage nightgowns. My music taste runs towards Adele, Andrea Bocelli, moody alternative and much to the jest of my friends, Herb Alpert.

Rachelle: I like to know how some shop names came about. So How did you name your shop?

Sintwister: Sintwister was a nickname my mom gave to my sister and I, who are only 18 months apart. We were so much alike growing up and practically inseparable so she thought we were more like delayed twins then siblings. Sintwister was her take on twin sisters. Apparently we were a tad devilish – hence the “sin” part!

Rachelle: How would you describe your work/shop? Who should definitely stop by? Or, who would you like to see your entire photography process?

Sintwister: Hmm…I guess I would describe my shop as a daydream since it’s full of quiet, glimpses into thoughtful subjects. I think my shop might appeal to anyone who is romantic at heart, anyone who is curious about back story and anyone that appreciates subtlety.

Rachelle: What keeps you motivated?

Sintwister: My husband for sure. He’s my most encouraging (and loudest) supporter. Imagining a voice and perspective for photo subjects that have neither also keeps me motivated. You know that saying “if these walls could talk”…I’m constantly looking for what they would be telling me.

Rachelle: Do you have any advice for those who are new to treasury making? Any advice to those who are new to Etsy?

Sintwister: Regarding treasury making, my advice would just be to have fun with it. Treasuries are like continuously blooming flowers. They showcase other people’s items and shops while also intuitively defining your own likes and dislikes. Everyone benefits! I have had a few of my treasuries make it to the front page which is always thrilling. I don’t think there is any one equation as to why and which some treasuries get more attention than others, but I think if you have a consistent theme throughout your collection and you communicate that theme with the participating shops in your collection, then it has a better chance to resonate with more people. Worse comes to worse, you have exposed 16 new people to your shop by creating one treasury. So that’s not bad!

As for newbies to Etsy, my advice would be to share, share, share. Etsy will only be as great as you make it. So get out there and embrace the thousands (or is it millions by now?!) of Etsy artists at your finger tips and build up your network of support by participating in treasury groups, circles, and forums. The more you connect with others, the more exposure you have and the better chance of sales. Take compelling pictures of your shop items and tell people why they will LOVE that item as much as you do. And finally, be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was a successful Etsy shop. Everything comes in time as long as you are persistent, stay involved and keep an attitude of gratitude.

Rachelle: What inspires your treasuries?

Sintwister: Lots of things! Colors, a great title, pop-culture, a dream from the night before, song lyrics, the weather, calendar dates, books, an issue I’m trying to work out in my heart or sometimes it is just a fabulous item that spawns the collection of 15 other fabulous items.

Rachelle: Please name 3-5 of your favorite Etsy Shops.

Sintwister: There are so many favorite shops of mine and new ones popping up everyday. Narrowing it down to 5 is tough but these are ones I often find myself returning to day after day:

1. FrickandFrackScraps

Rachelle: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Sintwister: Hopefully with my husband, settled in a house that we absolutely adore. Santiago and Satchem will be there of course. And Hanna, who will beat the record for the oldest living border collie. Presently the record belongs to a dog in Ireland who lived to be 27 on a diet consisting soley of turnip greens. Hanna is 14, enjoys all foods except turnip greens, and is still every bit as sassy at 14 then she was when she was 4. Who knows what the future will really hold though. All I can wish for is peace, health, and happiness for everyday in front of today. After living in New York and experiencing the awfulness of September 11th first hand I have learned that, while it is commendable to make future plans, the only day we can really count on is today. So I just try to make each one count and hope for the best for as far as the future.

Team Interview: mktengineer

Megan Hall - mktengineer on Etsy

Name: Megan Hall

Facebook:
www.facebook.com/pages/mktengineer/117530461658606

Rachelle: Tell me a little about yourself.
Megan: I currently live in southwestern Ohio with my husband, Jake. We have a bouncy boxer named Brady, and my rescued baby cat is Dixie Cup. By day I am a mechanical engineer in the aviation industry, working mostly in jet engine support. At night, I put down the calculator and pick up a pair of pliers and attempt to make jewelry. When I am not working or jewelry making, I try to spend as much time as I can with family. I love vintage clothing, shoes, literature, anything Disney, golf, cereal, documentaries, steampunk, pin up, physics, and napping

Rachelle: How would you describe your work/shop? Who should definitely stop by?
Megan: I wear a lot of black, so I have always been drawn to bold, colorful jewelry. I especially like textures that allow for color contrast. So, anyone looking to add some colorful texture to their style should stop by and hopefully find the perfect finishing touch.

Some of my favorites from mktengineer on Etsy

Rachelle: What keeps you motivated?
Megan: I am a perfectionist. I hate to settle if I know I am capable of much more. The desire to succeed has always kept me moving.

Rachelle: Do you have any advice for those who are new to treasury making?
Megan: Don’t publish something you are not in love with. I think it is so easy to forget that treasuries represent both you and your shop. Showing uniqueness and creativity in a collection really reflects the work of the curator.

Rachelle: What inspires your treasuries?
Megan: Most of my treasuries are based on random things I read or see during the day. Example: I recently read a piece about trending outerwear for the winter and I fell in love with a featured houndstooth pea coat. So, I based an entire collection on that very textile.

Megan's favorite from mktengineer on Etsy

Rachelle: What are your three favorite Etsy shops?

1. Herblueyestudio : must stick with family
2. Sea Marie Creations : I am in love with her white tea and ginger goats milk soap!
3. Helenabiancastudios : awesome handmade body jewelry

Rachelle: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Megan: A lot of my plans for the future have changed so much with the drastic changes in the economy. It doesn’t matter where I end up ten years from now, as long as I can say I am happy. Mostly, I really hope my husband and I are able to start a family before then.

Team Interview: victoriaruhl

Victoria Ruhl

Name: Victoria Ruhl
Location: Worcester, MA (central MA, about an hour west of Boston)
Shop: victoriaruhl
Blog: www.vdazzled2.blogspot.com
Twitter: www.twitter.com/vdazzled
Facebook: www.facebook.com/vdazzled
Link
Rachelle: Tell me a little about yourself:
Victoria: I am a graduate student by day, getting my PhD in cancer Biology at Umass Medical School. I needed a hobby to take my mind off of school and lab at night so I got into making my own jewelry and a few items for friends and family. After a suggestion to look into opening up shop on Etsy, my little shop got its start and my signature wire wrapped studs were born! So my life goes like this: work in lab 9-12 hours a day (average about 10 hours a day) then whatever free time I have before going to bed is dedicated to filling orders. :)

Victoria's Favorite - her signature studs - victoriaruhl on Etsy

Rachelle: How would you describe your work/shop? Who should definitely stop by?
Victoria: I like to think that you could own a pair of studs for any outfit and any function. :) I wear my own earrings everyday (it's nice when I can just make myself a pair to match any outfit I have own!) but I think women of any age group can appreciate a great pair of stud earrings. The studs are lightweight and easy to wear. Anyone who loves a bit of sparkle would love the earrings!

Rachelle: What keeps you motivated?
Victoria: If you couldn't tell from my description of myself, I hate being bored. I really can't sit and not do anything, so I guess my motivation is keeping myself busy. And I also love seeing my little business grow!

Rachelle: Do you have any advice for those who are new to treasury making?
Victoria: Definitely make sure you have a nice flow to the items in your treasury and also a good mix of items. I love looking at treasuries that feel like a work of art.

Rachelle: What inspires your treasuries?
Victoria: I usually will look at a shop and find one item that catches my eye and base the treasury off that one item. Sometimes I also pick a theme out of the merchandising report.

My Favorites from victoriaruhl on Etsy

Rachelle: What are your three favorite Etsy shops?
Victoria: This is so hard to pick just 3!
1. I love IslaNewYork's clothing - www.etsy.com/shop/islanewyork
2. I also love these headbands - www.etsy.com/shop/bellaheadbands - We both sell our items at a local shop and I have bought a couple of her headbands there. :)
3. The vintage dresses here are awesome: www.etsy.com/shop/TheVintageStudio - I am always browsing through it, wishing I had more places to wear a vintage dress!

Rachelle: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Victoria: Hopefully working at a successful pharmaceutical company (gotta put the PhD to work!) and still making stud earrings in my free time!

Team Interview: CicaleTdesigns

Name: Tami Cicale
Location: Right outside of Annapolis, Maryland
Shop: CicaleTdesigns - www.CicaleTdesigns.etsy.com
Pinterest: pinterest.com/cicaletdesigns
Facebook: www.facebook.com/CicaleTDesigns

LinkTami's Shop Favorites - CicaleTdesigns on Etsy

Rachelle: Tell me a little about yourself. How would you describe your work/shop?
Tami: My name is Tami Cicale, 38, married with two boys, 14 and 4. I work full time as a police officer, my assignment for the past seven years is at the Police Academy teaching annual training to experienced officers. I usually only have time on the weekends and few evenings to spend on my Etsy shops. My week nights tend to be crazy with the boys and sports and the rest of life.

Rachelle: How would you describe your work/shop? Who should definitely stop by?
Tami: I work with a variety of mediums- crystals, gemstones, metals, resin and always tons of beads. I think I have an addiction to buying beads- I can't seem to help myself. I make just one of each item and usually have no idea what I am going to come up with until I sit down and start moving pieces around. I like to mix materials together to come up with something really different.

I think my work appeals to those looking for a unique and bold accessory. They go just as easy with work attire as casual weekend wear.

Rachelle: What keeps you motivated?
Tami:
I keep motivated and inspired by attending bead shows, art fairs, looking through magazines and at interior design and color trends.

Rachelle: What inspires your treasuries?
Tami: I love to make treasuries with a theme, usually color based. I tend to create treasuries that have more of a dreamy, soft, pretty feel. I hope that those featured like the end result and appreciate the effort.

I love the tools from shmetsy.com - Huge time saver and makes it much more enjoyable. I try not to take my treasuries that seriously. I hope my treasuries are enjoyed and maybe will help the featured artist get exposure or even sales. I Captain a treasury building team and we definitely work hard at making treasuries each month but we also realize it should be for fun and we all still have shops and lives to run.

Rachelle: What are your three favorite Etsy shops?

Tami:LinkBagatellesAndCo

Homako

GabrielleKai

I also have a second shop here on Etsy- Hair adornments

adorablelittleme

Rachelle: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Tami:
Luckily- I get to retire in seven years. I see myself still making my jewelry and hair accessories. I would love to have some real space to work, instead of my dining room. I keep threatening to take over my oldest sons room the minute he leaves for college. I have a hard time keeping track of the thousands of beads and findings I have when I keep re-packing my space all the time.
I really enjoy the sense of community here on Etsy and try to stay away from getting sucked into some of the forums where people tend to get way to nasty and sarcastic for my taste. I love my teams and hope to continue finding new ways to promote one another.

My favorite selections from CicaleTdesigns on Etsy

Here is some more from Tami (Read for some great tips!):
Tami: I have come a long way with my photography skills here and discovered that even the best photo could use a little editing.
I spend a lot of time on merchandising my items, setting up the right backgrounds and props to really showcase them. I faux finished some poster boards to come up with my own backgrounds and use a lot of paper from specialty shops and Micheal's crafts.
A great source for backgrounds is to see if your local paint store has any expired wallpaper books that you can have. They usually throw them away so its a great way to recycle them into some useful for your shop.

Team Interview: fionadesigns

A selection of cards and notes from fionadesigns on Etsy

Welcome to our newest team interview feature, starring Fiona, of fionadesigns. Enjoy!

Name: Fiona
Location: Connecticut
Website: www.fionadesigns.com/
Shop: www.etsy.com/shop/fionadesigns
Blog: www.fionadesigns.blogspot.com/
Twitter: twitter.com/fionasdesign
Facebook: www.facebook.com/FionaDesigns

Fiona, wearing a scarf she knitted - she's multi-talented!

Rachelle: Tell me a little about yourself:
Fiona: I currently reside in Connecticut, with my husband and two dogs. I have always enjoyed art and have worked in the corporate and non for profit settings as a Graphic Designer and Art Director. I love designing and that is what led me to design greeting cards and most recently personalized stationery. I also love photography, knitting and am a huge dog lover!

Rachelle: How would you describe your work/shop? Who should definitely stop by?

Fiona: Truth be told it's not as neat and organized as I would like it to be. I would love to have Martha Stewart stop by because it would be great to have her help create a more organized space!

Rachelle: What keeps you motivated? How do you choose what to make, especially on your personalized notes?
Fiona: I created my first dog silhouettes shortly after the adoption of our second dog. I thought it would be fun to have them on personalized stationery and thought others would like to have their dogs on stationery too! I enjoyed creating the silhouettes so much that I started thinking of what else I could illustrate in a similar fashion. I seem to get motivation and inspiration for my stationery from everywhere!

Rachelle: Do you have any advice for those who are new to treasury making?
Fiona: Enjoy the process and the experience of finding new delightful items on Etsy! Most importantly have fun with it!

Rachelle: What inspires your treasuries?
Fiona: Sometimes I have an idea in advance of creating a treasury, but more often than not I am inspired by a particular item in my favorites and build a collection around it.

Rachelle: What are your three favorite Etsy shops?
Fiona: It is just too hard to pick three favorites as there are so many stores on Etsy that I love!

Rachelle: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Fiona: That's always a tough question but I definitely hope to still be designing!

Team Interview: glistenbyerin

Introducing a new Selection Perfection item on the blog - the team member interview! We decided it would be awesome to feature members and get to know about their creative endeavors, background, and more.

We wanted to feature a super interview to start with and selected Erin, from glistenbyerin. She is an outstanding Selection Perfection team member and makes so many incredible Treasuries every month. You are welcome to check them out at this link here.

Here is more about the wonderful Erin, from glistenbyerin -

Left Main: Stormy Earrings; Right Top: Coral Rose Earrings; Right Bottom: Sweet Peach Earrings

Name: Erin
Location: Virginia
Website: http://erinforehandphotography.com/
Shop: glistenbyerin.etsy.com

Mandy: Tell me a little about yourself:
Erin: I am a wife, mother, nurse, photographer, and jewelry maker. I love Jesus, making my kids smile, and have a slight obsession with cupcakes. Sometimes I think I have the best job in the world... I get paid to love! But beyond nursing, and am a creative being and am always thinking of my next artsy venture.

Mandy: How would you describe your work/shop? Who should definitely stop by?
Erin: My shop is simplistic, filled with items made purely from love, and there is not a single item I don't adore. I wouldn't even try to sell something I wouldn't use myself, which may make me limited in some way, but brings me joy.

glistenbyerin - Erin's Shop in Virginia - so cute!

Mandy: What keeps you motivated?

Erin: My children are constant motivators for me, plus my fear of feeling unaccomplished. I adore handmade things and instead of just admiring treasures, I believe in crafting, breaking in, and making them my own.

Mandy: Do you have any advice for those who are new to treasury making?
Erin: Treasury making can be such a peaceful way to use your creativity. Make treasuries with things you love, not just things that look good together.

Mandy: What inspires your treasuries?
Erin: Treasuries are such an addiction of mine. Usually, I come up with an idea at some odd time like in the shower or at my "real" job. Other times, I just feel the need to create one and scan various Etsy shops until it hits me. Sometimes all it takes is a single item that I find and flip over to make a new treasury revolving around that one bit of awesomeness.

Mandy: What are your three favorite Etsy shops?
Erin: Ok, so I have 176 pages of favorited Etsy shops so this question seems highly unfair! But, if I must choose right now, I'd have to say:
1. tohold
2. THIMBLEandACORN
3. whichgoose

Mandy: If you could be any animal, which would you be and why?
Erin: A Dog. I love my dogs, and If I can't be a human with my family, it is a dog's life that seems the most comfortable, cherished, and loved.
